Docusate sodium is for short term use in the relief of occasional constipation caused by hard stools. Also useful in conditions in conditions in chich painful or difficult defecation should be avoided, e.g., diseases if the rectum and colon, postpartum constipation, recent myocardial infarction, abdominal surgery and when peristaltic stimulants are contrindicated. Stool softening generally occurs within 24 to 48 hours post-dosing.
Dosage/Directions for use
Drink increased fluids (1 full glass (250 mL) or more. To be taken with water or fruit juice. More rapid results are obtained when laxatives are taken on an empty stomach. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Infants and children up to 2 years old: As directed by a physician. Children 2 to 6 years old: 1 to 5 mL daily. Give in half a glass of milk or fruit juice or in infants formula.
Keep this product and all medecine out of the reach of children. Do not take at the same time as drugs your physician may have prescribed for you, because the effectiveness of other medicine may be affected by the laxative action of this product. Do not administer concomitantly with mineral oil or increased absorption of the oil may result. May cause gastrointestinal mucosa damage especially if used with ASA (Aspirin). If a sudden change in bowel habits persist for 2 weeks or more, do not take any laxative without first seeking professional advice. If a laxative produces no effect after it has been used as recommended for 1 week, or if rectal bleeding is observed, stop using the product and consult a physician. Pregnancy and lactation: Pregnant or nursing mother should not take any drug, including Docusate sodium, without consulting a health professional. In case of accidental overdose, seek professional assistance or contact your local Poison Control Centre immediately.
